White Gold!

If one was just looking at Mt Wellington and trying to gauge the snow fall this week, you would be forgiven for underestimating… grossly. A look at today’s web cam pic at 2pm reveals a different story altogether.

Back in the good old days P.C. (Pre cam), it was quite a guessing game for the clubs. Trying to plan the weekend ahead often relied on someone doing the trip up and having a look, often that wan’t until Friday evening at the earliest.

Somewhere around 40-50cm of snow has fallen so far and the Mawson tow is starting to dissapear under the drifts! And there’s still more – potenitally a lot more to come, with snow forecast right through to the weekend.

However, having a big dump of snow up there is one thing, being able to get to it in order to enjoy it is another.

We’re all hoping that recent talks with Parks and the road clearing contractors will produce a more responsive outcome – using appropriate machinery for the task. Time will tell, here’s hoping!

The tow line and rope is going to need some serious digging out by the end of the week. So I would like to put a call out to all club members and any willing members of the public to jump in and lend a hand on Saturday morning. If you have a little avvi shovel or the like, bring it along please – the more the merrier!

I’ll be swapping my bindings onto my powder skis in anticipation, see you up there to play in the White Gold!

I've been involved with Mt Mawson since 1990 as a volunteer and I'm a member of the Oldina Ski club. I'm into skiing, a bit of snow boarding, snow shoeing and I'm partial to taking the odd photo.

Hmmm… I just checked the Parks Road report early this evening. It was issued this morning – Tuesday 5th Sept. at 10am. To paraphrase: “Road closed and road clearing underway, this road report will only be updated once road conditions change”.

I checked this at 5.30 pm today, so does that mean the road is still closed because they didn’t get it cleared (after a whole day…) or does it mean that they didn’t update the road report??
