The ski tows at Mt Mawson Ski Field opened today after a massive effort from the volunteers from Mt Mawson Ski Club to excavate and de-ice the tows. The volunteers spent Saturday digging out the tow line and lifting pulleys in full-on blizzard conditions, and then on Sunday morning turned to the huge task of removing ice from the pulleys and ropes. It was an Antarctic experience, and once again everyone weighed in to help (including some back country skiers who were just passing by).
Their efforts were rewarded when just before midday today the tows started turning , so marking the beginning of the Tasmanian ski season for 2022. Snow conditions were superb, and soon a good crowd of skiers and snowboarders were enjoying the excellent conditions.
The STSA volunteers will again be in action tomorrow for the Monday holiday of the June long weekend, so come on up to Mt Field National Park and enjoy the early snowfall. Maybe the sun will even come out!
What a great start to the season, such a contrast to the last one. I bet thatcall the hard work you lot have put into the field over the last few years is really paying off.
