Snow cover on Rodway Range 28 June 2017

The snowfalls and cold weather across Tasmania the past week have seen enthusiastic skiers and boarders watching the Mt Mawson web cams with great interest – and there is no doubt that we now have the beginnings of an excellent base for 2017.

The ski field at Mt Mawson is run entirely by volunteers from the Southern Tasmanian Ski Association, with different ski clubs being rostered on to take responsibility for operating the ski tows and ensuring Ski Patrol is present. This weekend it is the turn of the Hobart Walking Club and the Alpine Club of Tasmania, but as of lunchtime Thursday it has been deemed that there is still not quite enough snow cover on the top part of the Mawson run to allow safe skiing and snowboarding. There is some more snow forecast to low levels on Thursday night / Friday, but whilst this will be helpful we can’t be sure whether it will be sufficient. It will, however, mean that it will be a very pretty scene going up the Dobson Road and there is no doubt a lot of families will make the trip to Mt Field National Park to enjoy some early season snow play.

There is a more substantial snowfall forecast for next Tuesday and Wednesday, so we are optimistic that we will be able to get the Southern Tasmanian ski season underway the following weekend (8-9 July).
