First snowfall for 2021

The cold Southerly blast across Tasmania today (Sunday 11 April) brought snow to low levels, and whilst visitors had trouble accessing the snow at Kunyani Mt Wellington that was not the case at Mt Field. In fact there was so much snow a number of cars got stuck in the Dobson car park and had to be towed or pushed out!

Subtle fagus colour still visible

Unfortunately the STSA web camera at the Mt Mawson Ski Field is out of action until our volunteer webcam guru Ian Stewart is able to make a trip up there to make some modifications, but fortunately Isobel Webber was kind enough to send through some photos to show us all how beautiful it was up there today – thanks Isobel!

      Hi Peter,

Can we hire equipment to ski? I’ll be down in July with the family, kids, 5 and 6 years old. Cheers. Ivo 0412 301 439

        Hi Ivo,

Unfortunately there are no longer any shops hiring ski equipment in Hobart. We have put some information up on the Mt Mawson website under FAQ-Contact which gives some suggestions for where you can source some cheap gear. Quite a few people get started by borrowing from other club members too…Good luck!

Oh wow! That is truly Beautiful!
Myself and the missus were hoping to visit this year again, with the emphasis to see snow in a wooden cabin with beautiful log fire. Hopefully this can be a dream come true?

Hi Gary, The Government Huts at Mt Field National Park could be just what you are looking for. Check out details on the Parks and Wildlife website.

Hi Peter, we are so thankful for your Ski Club with good help for first time visitors like us, planning our trip to enjoy skiing at Mt Mawson. But may i have some contact how to rent or borrow ski gear, ski boots ? I am a 50 year old mum driving with a 20 year old girl, 2 boys 20+ year old eagerly coming to experience this exciting sport.
I will rent a car driving from Hobart to Mt Mawson, please advise what type of car should i book for ? Do i need a pass to enter Mt Mawson ? We hope with your help, we will be satisfied with this skiing trip. We will be there on 21st July. Hope to get your reply and start renting the ski gear before arriving, worried we could not ski without having these ski gears for the young adults. This is our ultimate goal for this trip.

      Hi Janet,

You will need a National Parks Pass to visit Mt Field National Park – see http://www.passes.parks.tas.gov.au/. It might be wise to hire a 4WD or AWD car – a 2WD car is OK too, but if there is snow on the road you will need to fit snow chains which is an extra complication (and an extra hire cost)., cheers, Peter

Awesome! My friend and I are very interested in visiting, hiking and doing some runs on boards. Is there any contact info about when the tows are working / available or when other like-minded people might wish to visit- obviously when the snow gods deliver

Yes Darren, great, I hope you make it up, where are you based? If you’re in Hobart, then it’s worth a trip up if we get a foot of snow, even if the tows aren’t running, you can usually walk some runs on the jeep trail access road. But otherwise, just keep an eye on the website’s front page. You’ll see plenty of activity if we start getting good snowfall. Once we do get snow, I’ll start publishing the snow report in the RH sidebar. That will include opening info. It could be a late-season this year,We’ll need to see a break in the current pattern of lows forming in high latitudes and sweeping through Bass Straight (good for the mainland resorts, but not for us).

Could you recommend to me pkease which is the nearest accommodation to sky club to stay?

    • Avatar photo Peter Davis says:

Hi Angela, The nearest accomodation to the ski field is the Mt Field Government Huts operated by the Parks and Wildlife Service. They are only $45 per hut, and are very popular so you would need to book through the PWS website or call 6491 1179. Otherwise the Russell Falls Holiday cottages are definitely worth a look.
