COVID-19 Update – Mt Mawson Ski Field June 2020

We have all been watching developments regarding the COVID-19 pandemic with great concern, and considering how it impacts on our ability to operate the Mt Mawson Ski Field safely this winter. The Mt Mawson Ski Field is operated entirely by volunteers, and their safety, and the safety of the public using the ski tows is paramount.

The Southern Tasmanian Ski Association has considered advice from the Mt Mawson Ski Patrol and reviewed the Government’s COVID-19 Guidelines. Whilst we would like to be able to operate the tows this winter, it is apparent that COVID-19 introduces some additional challenges and risks associated with operating in the alpine environment, with our rope tows posing some particular challenges. Whilst it may be possible to achieve appropriate physical distancing on the tows and in the public shelter, the provision and management of the additional PPE needed for our volunteer ski patrollers to manage casualties, and the difficulties of being able to sanitise the tow belts necessary for using the rope tows is problematic for our volunteers in the ticket office.

After much discussion the STSA has concluded that with the current advice on COVID-19 it will not be sensible for us to open the tows at Mt Mawson at this stage. We will continue to monitor the situation and review options as the weeks progress.

Cross country skiing and tobogganing will of course be available – and if there is a change in plans in relation to the ski tows we will let you know.

Come on . It’s just a spray and a wipe . Let people choose for themselves . Gloves and distance .limit the amount of skiers to a manageable number .correct money surely you can come up with a plan .

It would be interesting to know how the NZ club fields that have rope tows plan to address this issue. Seems like all will open this season except Craigieburn. If handling cash is a concern this could be easily solved by paying by direct credit.
