As the winter chill sets in it is time to make sure that our volunteers are all ready and trained to operate the Mt Mawson Ski Field once the snow arrives. The Southern Tasmanian Ski Association (STSA) is therefore running a training session this Saturday 25th May for all STSA Clubs and anyone who is interested in learning how the tows are operated.
Long term STSA Committee member Ambrose Canning from the Ski Club of Tasmania will conduct the tow operator training, and will cover starting and stopping the tows, operation of the safety circuits, how to set up the tow ropes, engine management and so on.
STSA Secretary Annette Levis from the Wellington Outdoor and Ski Club will conduct training on the operation of the Mt Mawson ticket office, including how to use the point of sale terminal, how to issue and track tow belts and how to set up the ticket office for comfortable winter operation.
It is important that volunteers from all the ski clubs on the mountain participate, as with the variable nature of Tasmanian snow we need to be ready to operate at short notice if conditions allow. If you haven’t been involved for a while come up for the refresher training, and if you haven’t been involved before come up to learn – you will be most welcome.
There will of course be a few maintenance jobs being undertaken at the same time. The most exciting is the installation of new batteries for the STSA facilities at the Mt Mawson Day Shelter. This has been made possible by a generous donation, and will double the electric storage capacity available (very important on cloudy weekends when there is not much solar input). Paul Vince from the Australian Ski Patrol Association will be undertaking this installation, and will also be available for certifying any Ski Patrollers who need their assessments to be completed in readiness for the upcoming season.
Please meet at the Lake Dobson gate at 10:00 am on Saturday – see you there!
Wishing you all great success with the maintenance and battery work. Also wishing you the best of Snow Seasons.
