A warm sunny weekend, and icypoles delivered by a generous member of the public, set the scene for a fun weekend of skiing, boarding and snow play at Mt Mawson on 12-13 September. While the temperature in Hobart reached a warm spring high of 24 C, lots of families made the trip up the Lake Dobson Road to make the most of the good snow cover that still remains after a record cold Winter.
STSA Volunteers from the Oldina Ski Club operated both Uni and Mawson Tows, and were well supported by members of the Mt Mawson Ski Patrol. Whilst the snow is receding from exposed areas, the protection provided by the new snow fences meant that it was still possible to ski the full length of both runs, there is still a good deep snow cover on the upper part of the mountain. The sunny weather meant T shirts were the order of the day, and people using the tows ranged from experienced snow-boarders, to telemark skiers and a number of people trying out skiing and boarding for the first time. A classic day in the Tasmanian mountains.
