Snow Season Extends

Mt Mawson Public Shelter 19 September 2024

It seems the weather man didn’t read the tow roster for the 2024 ski season, as all the best snow has arrived right at the end of the official season! There is a good base of snow on the Mt Mawson Ski Field with more forecast today and tomorrow, before a moderating of conditions on Saturday.

The plan is to operate both the Uni tow and the Mawson tow this weekend, although the Mawson tow will have to be  monitored very carefully as it has sustained some damage to the rope. Rather than attempt a full splice of the rope this late in the season it will run with a wider spacing of skiers and boarders than normal to try to minimise the load on the rope.

As you know the Mt Mawson Ski Field is run entirely by volunteers, and as we are now well into September the number of helpers is somewhat reduced. This weekend the duty clubs are the Hobart Walking Club and the Alpine Club of Southern Tasmania, both of which have only a small number of active skiing members. Any assistance from other clubs to help keep the ski field going would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like the snow will be with us for a little while yet, and so we are planning ahead for future weekends of tow operation. The duty club for the weekend of 28/29 September is the Mt Mawson Ski Club.

Wish I could be there for you guys, we in Queensland have our school holidays, at present!! I’d change hot and muggy for cold and frosty right now, I love the snow, and there wasn’t anywhere near as much of it (snow), when we visited in September 2022, just the remnants of the old season, some deep little patches that entertained our granddaughter, who had never seen the stuff, deep enough to make some snow angels!! Anyway, maybe another time next year??
