There were plenty of people up at Mt Field National Park enjoying the late season snow today, and a lot of enthusiasm for getting the ski tows at Mt Mawson running despite the windy conditions. STSA volunteers from the Oldina Ski Club and the Mt Mawson Ski Patrol are on the mountain ready to run the tows on Sunday, but of course it all depends on whether the snow holds overnight, gets added to by more of the fresh stuff, or gets washed away by rain 🙃 The weather is forecast to be quite stormy this evening, and it only takes a small increase in temperature to spoil the fun.
We can only run the tows safely if there is enough coverage top to bottom, so fingers crossed we wake up on Sunday to a good snow cover. Make sure you look at the webcam images as that will give a good indication of the quality of the Mawson run, and if you are coming up be prepared for marginal or wild conditions. If we have to close early due to lack of snow or poor weather conditions at least the Jeep trail has good coverage and is sheltered from the wind.
Also take care on the Lake Dobson Road – it was open today for 4WD and 2WD with chains fitted, and very busy. There are a few sections where it is difficult to pass if there are cars coming in the opposite direction – in these circumstances it is worth reversing back to a wider section of road to allow cars to pass without going too far onto the side of the road.
It’s been a very warm winter with little snow up until this week, so let’s hope we can celebrate Father’s Day by getting the tows running at Mt Mawson tomorrow 🤞(Sunday 1st September)
