The Southern Tasmanian Ski Association has confirmed that the 2015 Ski Season at Mt Mawson Ski Field will kick off this Saturday 8th August. Volunteers from the Oldina Ski Club will be heading up the mountain on Friday to commence the task of digging out the tows in preparation for the arrival of what are expected to be record crowds on the weekend. Mt Mawson has received extensive snow fall over the past week, at a time when Hobart and its surrounding suburbs have received the most snow since 1986.
Mt Mawson is the only operating ski field in Southern Tasmania, and attracts large numbers of visitors when conditions are good. This weekend should be no exception, with fresh snow and a good cover, and a forecast of light winds. Visitors are reminded to dress warmly and bring your own food and drink. There is only limited public shelter available on the mountain (a temporary shipping container provided by the Tasmanian Government). The Parks and Wildlife Service will advise whether snow chains will be required on the Lake Dobson Road. Once at Lake Dobson its a pleasant 30-45 minute walk up the snowy jeep trail to reach the ski fields.
