Good progress was made at Mt Mawson Ski Field during the week by Vos builders, with lining of the interior of the Ski Patrol Room well advanced. With the windows all in the building is attracting many favourable comments, even without its final colour and cladding.
On the weekend another STSA Working Bee was held, with volunteers focussing on preparing ski patrol equipment for the imminent opening of the season, and completing the installation of the solar power system. Katherine Davis and Paul Vince of the Mount Mawson Ski Patrol worked with the assistance of Karen Davis on Saturday to construct additional storage facilities in the Belt Issue Hut for ski patrol supplies, also clearing the Ticket Office of Ski Patrol gear ready for operation. Save on Solar Power contractor Peter Burnett was assisted by Peter Davis and Paul Vince in installing the new deep cycle batteries and inverter to ensure the First Aid Room has power available for essential equipment.
It was a beautiful day to be working on the mountain, and lots of families with young children had walked up to toboggan on the excellent snow base above “New Sitzmark”. There were also a number of people snow-shoeing and walking out to the Tarn Shelf to enjoy the spectacular views.
Now the race between the weather and the builders resumes. There is a good base of snow on the slopes, and with significant snow fall forecast for Tuesday through to Thursday it is looking very positive that the season should be able to get underway next weekend. Let’s hope that everything comes together to allow it to happen, including the building preparation, and road clearing.
