There was only one skifield open in Australia today, and it was the Mt Mawson Ski Field in the Mt Field National Park, Tasmania. And what a day it was! It stayed cold and mostly sunny all day, with excellent snow conditions. There was quite a bit of fresh powder snow overnight, and of course it had filled up the trench at the top of the Mawson run. Once again the volunteers from Oldina Ski Club got stuck into shovelling the tow path, and soon after 10 am the tows were running again.

Top of the Mawson run – before digging🙂

Stephen and Kieren dig out the Mawson tow for the second day in a row!
A big crowd of skiers and boarders turned up keen to sample the unexpected big snowfall, including a number of visitors who had not been to Mt Mawson before, as well as many who “skied here 30 years ago”. There plenty of people on hand to help newbies master the rope tow, and it was a happy, busy snow scene all day. Even at 4:00 pm on a Sunday (and the last day of the school holidays) there was still a big crowd enjoying Mt Mawson.

Classic Mt Mawson – check out Bill’s long skis!

Mt Mawson Ski Field, Sunday 12 October 2025
Mt Mawson Ski Field is entirely run by volunteers, working on ski field infrastructure in the summer, and operating the ski tows and providing Ski Patrol services in the winter (and Spring). A huge thanks to everyone who helped out this year, and has kept the wonderful tradition of skiing at “National Park” well and truly alive!
