The 2025 ski season finally kicked off in style on Saturday 6th September with excellent snow, and a beautiful blue bird day.
As is always the way getting the tows dug out and ready to run after a big snowfall is a big task for the volunteers, but the crew from Oldina Ski Club plus other STSA clubs got stuck into the task to get the season underway soon after 10 am. The Mount Mawson Ski Patrol completed all their checks and soon the mountain was covered with happy skiers and boarders enjoying the unique experience of skiing in Southern Tasmania.

Overall it was a great day until shortly before 3:30 pm the Mawson tow motor experienced a technical hitch (an issue with the clutch in the diesel motor). This needs some further analysis, and so the tow closed half an hour early after a truly excellent day’s skiing.
In typical Tasmanian fashion, however, the weather has taken a turn for the worse today (Sunday) with rain and wind making it unpleasant on the mountain. Ski patrol lead Paul Vince headed across to Uni tow to see if it was safe to operate that tow today, but was falling through the soft snow to the ground even with his snow shoes on. So unfortunately the tows will not be operating today, and Saturday remains the highlight of the season so far.
Fingers crossed we get some more snow, and are able to sort the issue with the Mawson tow motor.
Congratulations to all, a lot of effort is paid off on days like these. Wonderful.
