Saturday 7th September dawned fine and clear, and the Lake Dobson road was open after some flooding damage during the week. A good crowd of winter enthusiasts made the trip up to Mt Mawson Ski Field for a bonus day of Tasmanian spring skiing, and were met with surprisingly good conditions.
It was a beautiful walk up the Jeep trail in the morning sun, and a small group of volunteers from the Ski Club of Tasmania supported by other STSA volunteers had the Mawson tow running by 11:00 am.
Once again there was a great mix of people enjoying a ski or board, with excellent views, uncrowded slopes and a nice community vibe. The Mt Mawson Ski Patrol were well represented with a number of new ski patrollers attending. A highlight was the visit of international professional ski patroller Hyeonsoo Kong, who had flown in from South Korea to patrol with the Mt Mawson Ski Patrol Team.
Having a community ski field in such a stunning setting, and so close to Hobart is very special, and it is wonderful that the snow finally turned up to allow the Skifield to operate.
Given the good cover, and the prospect of some further light snowfalls tomorrow it is planned to operate the Skifield again tomorrow (Sunday 8 September)
Absolutely beautiful, I’m so jealous!! Cloudy muggy weather is what we are experiencing, here in North Queensland. Have a good season
Thanks Gary – great to hear from you. Sometimes we look at the calm sunny weather in North Queensland and get envious too!
