You may have noticed that we have a new Cam at the base of the Mawson run that now captures a broader view of the Mt Mawson vista. The wide-angle webcam (118 degrees field of view) encompasses the ski run and Mawson tow line, right across to the Mt Mawson peak and the Cornice area (far left of the image). We can even see the ticket/belt issue hut! It’s a fantastic panorama that better represents the beauty of the Mt Mawson area to our visitors, both locals and tourists alike!
Our webcam guru, Ian Stewart, has been very busy designing, building and installing the new kit. The new enclosure for the cam has some high-tech heating glass that should make de-frosting more efficient, therefore allowing us a clearer view, more quickly, after those big snow events.
The old Mawson cam is still working and we’ve reinstated it on the cams page as well. It allows for a more direct view up the Mawson Tow line and slope. Having two cams on the Mawson Tow also builds in some redundancy for us, so hopefully we won’t be left in the dark if one of them has a technical issue. Ian has also redesigned and built a new Summit Cam and enclosure, with upgrades to the electrics that should allow for better de-frosting. The old Summit Cam was always problematic to defrost. It will also be mounted in a more ‘maintenance friendly’ position, so he won’t be risking life and limb. Ian will be installing that sometime in the not too distant future I believe. Thanks to Ian for his great efforts, the webcams are an amazingly useful and valuable resource for all of us!
