April Working Bee

The second day of the April Working bee had two main focus areas – preparing the tows for operation, and completing the last couple of snow fence panels needing repair at the top of the Uni run.

Ambrose Canning and Tim Metcalf (with good support from Karen Davis) did a stirling job of getting the tows started when it was discovered the solar panels had not been charging the batteries properly. Both Mawson and Uni Tows were successfully test run, although it appears we will need to purchase new starter batteries prior to season commencement. Ian Stewart came up to check the web cam and successfully got the Mawson slope picture working again. I think it was a bit like the IT crowd – “turn it off and turn it on again!”  (actually a faulty port in the back of the camera). Ian also relocated the temperature sensor to the outside of the building so that it is not affected by the heat of the engine on tow operation days.

Peter Davis, Mark Underwood,  and Stephen Webber completed building the last remaining panel of snowfence on the Uni run, and Tony Oakes again did a great job of filling his trailer with old timber for removal from the mountain.

Its been a big effort over the Summer to get the fences organised in particular. Its also pleasing to see that Parks have now seeded the new groomed section at the bottom of the Mawson tow with alpine grass seed, held in place with a sprayed glue/ fertiliser mixture. Hopefully the grass will germinate before the snow arrives!

Remember the STSA meeting at the Baptist Hall, North Hobart at 8 pm tomorrow evening.
